| Civil War, Union Captain John Carlin, Carlin's Battery Captain John Carlin organized a unit of Wheeling men called Carlin’s Battery. As a Union group, these soldiers wore blue uniforms. West Virginia became the 35th state in 1863, so American flags at that time had 35 stars.  |
